Shore excursions comments

The high point of the cruise, in addition to Manaus, was a small group tour I organized with Gil Serique in Santarem; on New Year's Day he picked up the ten of us at the dock as soon as we were able to disembark, and took us to a small tour boat, where we had the run of the ship, and were treated to his descriptions of the birds and life along the river; he stopped the boat at an area that was walkable, while a crew member went looking for a sloth in the wild, and most of the group went off exploring the rainforest; upon return to Santarem his van took us to a small farm where a family demonstrated the harvesting of brazil nuts and cocoa beans, cutting a tree to gather the latex, grating manioc and processing it for family use.

When we got to the pier area, our tour guide was there to meet us and take us "away from the chaos." It was a short ride from the tender dock to the town and the beginning of a great day. Despite the rough start, the day turned out great. Our guide was a gentleman named Gil Serique (www.gilserique.com). He is a naturalist and a historian and if anyone is looking for a private tour, we can’t recommend him highly enough.

Jan 7th Pacific Princess

WE NEED TWO MORE COUPLES!!

The group will picked up at the port (I will be with a white van just by the Pacific Princess); I like starting driving so that we have an opportunity to see the city a bit, actually the participants have the option to stay longer in town on the way back.

We embark on a nice, clean and safe boat at the Richard Hennington pier (He was of the 300 American Confederates that moved to Santarem in 1870's). We head then to the meeting of the waters for pink dolphin observation. Our main destination is the floodplain area east of Santarem only 50 minutes down the river. It is an amazing site for bird watching, fishing and small hikes where we can see Three-toed sloths, Squirrel Monkeys and some birds representatives of the local avefauna.

We have not time for seating and eating so most of the time there will be fish tid bits, fresh fruit, crackers, Brazil nuts, Cashew nuts and lots of bottled drinks(of course mineral water) being served.

We shall use my little "book" to identify the various species of birds and mammals observed on the way. Varzea (Floodplain) represents only 12% of the Amazon basin and it is very scenic.

FEB. 22nd. MAASDAM

We are on the way to set a group of 15 people to run the floodplain exploration tour for passengers travelling on Maasdam.

Below you find some details of the trip. Pls never hesitate to ask or suggest.

I can guarantee you great views of Pind Dolphins, three-toed sloths
and many species of birds.
We shall have time for fishing for sure and of course we shall serve
you typical (safe) food and several fruit and nuts. If February the
water will be high enough(hopefully) for us to make short canoe rides
exploring the flodplain. It is really unique nice and safe.

I need at least 10 people to run this tour paying each u$120 per
person, max number of people is 15.

The plan is to pick you up by van at the port and drive to the pier in
downtown. We make a brief stop at the fish market where you can see
some of the fish fauna and the amazing Amazon River dolphins very close.

We head then to the meeting of the waters and 45m later we get on the
Maica river. In this river i will take you to my favourite spot where
we can fish, explore the the flooded forest by canoe, do birdwatching,
eat and drink.

You will love this!!
