Veendam, Alter do chao Tapajos national forest

Found out all about Gil on Internet and contacted him directly to find out if he could offer us anything on the day our Cruise ship was in Santarem. He suggested "Floodplain Exploration". We were not surprised to hear a lecturer on board mention Gil, saying he was the best guide there was; but we were very surprised that apart from the four of us there were only 3 other people on our excursion. We started out in a river boat and later transferred to a small boat to travel further into the rain forest. It was the highlight out of our holiday. Without Gil we would have not seen the sloths, hidden in the trees, or been able to identify any of the birds we saw. He is so knowledgeable and his enthusiasm for everything is catching. An experience not to be missed.

New Review

Gil has spent his life here. He's not a tour guide; he's a nature lover and expert on the flora and fauna of the area. He is special and so are his expeditions. Don't go with anyone else!? Gil knows where you want to go and takes you there.

My Floodplain Exploration

The tour I propose I Call it Floodplain Exploration and It is really,
really good! Lots of wildlife, History and scenically unforgettable!!!
If you want more details (and have any questions or concerns), please check reviews on  Trip Advisor or Cruisecritic and never hesitate to write.
My goal is to make your experience in the Amazon amazing and
enriching.
The tour, which is very different from what others offer, includes an
authentic Amazon boat cruise to the extraordinary meeting of the
Tapajos and Amazon rivers.  We will also explore the Floodplain, where
we will see many species of birds.  And I guarantee that we will see
Three-toed Sloths and Pink Dolphins!
Here is a link to my little e-book https://www.amazon.com/Essential-Wildlife-Cruiseship-Passengers-Amazon-ebook/dp/B01F2LEN68 . When you buy one it guarantees you a printed copy on arrival. Very most of the wildlife you will see on my little book is observed during your cruise and our tour. It also contains a centerfold map.

This area was also explored by famous Victorian biologists like Bates, Wallace, and Spruce.
The Canadian Arqueologist Charles Frederick Hartt with the Swiss Geologist Louis Agassiz were here as well and ( a lot more recently) Ann Roosevelt carried some of her revolutionary researches.
Several American Confederates moved here (you probably want to see this article http://www.sapiens.org/archaeology/american-confederates-amazon-basin/, as well as the infamous British 'rubber thief' Henry Wickham, who was hosted by The Riker family. Most of these people were acquainted to my Jewish grand-father Julio Serique, who moved from Morocco in 1850’s and became a merchant in the Tapajos River Valley. If you like fishing we do have the time for it and we provide basic
rods and fishing line.
During the tour we serve Brazil nuts, cashew nuts, fish snacks,
bottled drinks, the freshest lemonade, some beer, ice-cream and (I
promise) the very best caipirinhas.
I would like to suggest you getting Joe Jackson’s The Thief at the End
of the World. It is an amazing reading to have during your cruise. I
also worked with Joe Jackson and Redmond O'Hanlon on the documentary
you can access by the link below.
